Kamlaris rescue volunteer program is design to rescue the Kamlaris and eradicate the unbearable social crime Kamlaris pratha. In Nepal women and girls face the social discrimination. In general, they work twice as hard as men and boys and have far fewer opportunities to go to school and develop their potentials. Moreover, the practice of indentured child labor is still prevalent, especially in the rural western regions along the border of India. Young girls, known as Kamlaris, are sold by their parents or guardians to local landlords or urban households as domestic laborers. Some of the girls end up in the sex trade. The Kamlari girls, some as young as six years of age, are exploited, working long hours with little or no pay and are usually not allowed to attend school. Often the Kamlaris are physically abused.
Tharu girls from Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, and Kanchanpur are sent out as kamlaris, and in Bardiya, boys are also sent. Informal surveys by involved charities show that nearly 3,000 Tharu girls from lower Dang valley alone worked as kamlaris until their recent rehabilitation. They estimate a national figure of 20,000 to 25,000 from the five Tharu districts of western Nepal. The Kamlari girl is ‘sold’ through middlemen to far-off homes and businesses after a verbal contract with the parents during the winter festival of Maaghi, and down payment of Rs 4,000- 6,000. The contract is for one year, but it continues as parents receive annual payments through middlemen who are often the only ones who know where the girl is. The girls get just food and clothes, and in rare cases, some education. Nearly 90 percent of the kamalari girls are never sent to school. In Nepal many poor girls are sold into domestic servitude, factory work, and even the sex trade.
Sending young daughters as kamlaris (girl-child indentured laborers) is widespread in the Tharu community of lower Dang or Deukhuri valley and adjoining districts. The reason often cited is poverty and this tradition began when hill-people migrate and descended upon the fertile plains of the western tarai and slowly usurped the land once inhabited by the Tharus. Loss of land brought associated social ills as it changed the power equation within the communities. Mostly poor and illiterate, Tharus found themselves tilling the landlords’ farms in a sharecropping agreement so lopsided that they were in bondage as kamaiyas. And even then, many offered their daughters as household help to entice the maalik to give them sharecropping opportunities. Lack of family planning awareness contributed to large Tharu families, and sending a few daughters away became the norm.
As it is necessary to rescue the kamalari and aware in the society, to educate and make self reliant, operate various formal and informal education and skilful training to the kamalari girl, therefore, the organization is operating Kamlaris rescue program. We request all to participate in Kamlaris rescue program for the building of efficient society and study, research in the subject of culture of Nepali society through Kamlaris rescue volunteer program to eradicate the kamalari custom.
