The resident of this caste locates Byas, Ralpa and Khalanga village of North West region of Darchula District which is most remote of Far Western region of Nepal. The persons of Byas caste which falls in marginalized caste of Nepal are not any other sectors of Nepal. These Byasi castes deem themselves generation of Byas Saint who created Mahabharata. There are 31 surnames including Nakhyal, Napachyal, Baunal in the Sub castes of this caste. Byasi caste has self cultural custom and recognitions. They don’t go out of the house on Saturday, they don’t mix in the house on Tuesday, female woman don’t plough, don’t go two sides on condition of returning in home at night and they have recognition that if stayed at a house continuously 3 days, there shall be harmful. They don’t keep vacant pot in the room because it causes evil omen. Maternal uncle and nephew don’t wash hand by the water of same pot. If it doesn’t rain in time, they get dirt in the temple and they believe that god will be angry and have rain. They consider bad omen if cat crosses the way before them, if jackal cries, pot breaks and encounters widow woman.
Spoken language of Byasi caste is called Byasi. But script of Byas language has not been found yet. Ornament of Baysi caste called as Salipuli. Sa means mud and Li means flower whose full form is beautiful chain of ornament made of mud. Woman of Byasi caste wears chain made of mud. They wear ring in five fingers of the hand, Kanthi, Chandrahar, Champakali in throat and Birawati in head, Bulaki in nose and Bali in ear.
Male of Byasi caste wears gown till knee and trouser and tie head by turban and tie waistband and woman wears Chyu over waist and under waist Bhala. They perform eight rituals including birth, ceremony naming the child, Karnabhed, Mumo, Chhebar, marriage, Bhuhani and death since birth to death. Marriage rituals like engagement, Gandarbha and abduction are popular. As they have not dowry custom, Bride accepts widow. As this marginalized caste resides most remote hilly region and there is minimum number of school and their financial condition so poor, therefore, the numbers of educated people are so low. By deeming that the children of Byas caste would not be deprived from education in this 21st century and basic right of education should be for all, our organization has been collecting data of children of Byas caste, opening school in that region, encouraging for studying and operating awareness program.
